Malayalam has official language status in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Puducherry (Mahé) is also spoken by linguistic minorities in the neighbouring states; with significant number of speakers in the Kodagu and South Karnataka districts, and Nilgiris and Kanyakumari, Chennai districts of Tamil Nadu etc. The Malayali Diaspora also speaks it worldwide including Austria in Europe.
